Cool things from the press release email stacks that you should know about

Howdy.

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve been able to slow the hustle and breathe. It’s not just because of the pandemic mayhem. It’s the going back to school part. For the past few months, I’ve been tackled down with schoolwork.

Real talk: now is the best time to reconsider your career. Businesses are experiencing a shortage of workers willing to come back. If you ever considered a thought to do something else, now is the time. I highly suggest glancing at your local community college. These campuses are great resources of education that can be obtained reasonably within budget.

Of course, going back to school means placing all of my lovely hobbies and joys to the back burner. Included in that pile of hobbies is partaking in that pop culture joy. Which has also meant that my email is ridiculously stacked full of press releases. It went from months of meh to weeks of non-stop info. A lot of went straight to the trash of course. Then there are the gems that I must, must share.

Murder Podcast:

The Wonderland Murders & Secret History of Hollywood

wonderland murders.jpg

There must be some of milestone after your thirties that you cannot get enough of murder and mystery stores. For someone who cannot stand the gore or unnecessary bloodbath, murder podcasts has become a recently strange addiction. These stories feeds my inner morbid busy body paranoid weirdo.

The words “Wonderland”, “Murder”, and “Secret Hollywood,” all splayed against an image of LA in the purple/black sundown zeroed me right in. Since I’m still green on the murder story scene, I have no idea what these murders in 1981 were about. And I’m so morbidly eager to learn about them.

Nothing beats beat better than chills from a good murder thrill.

ABOUT: In the documentary podcast, Michael Connelly returns to his roots in journalism and examines the Wonderland Murders, an iconic and brutal mass murder in a city known for its murders. Named for the street in Laurel Canyon where the murders took place inside the house of a small-time drug gang, it’s a gruesome crime that reflected its time, disrupted a mythology and tells a broader story of Los Angeles, the American dream machine, and when justice does – and doesn’t – work. And for the first time, a notorious, “missing” witness unlocks it all and puts the pieces together.”

Coming up on Netflix

Kate

It was the neon in the poster. I had to check it out. After watching the trailer, I could only ask, “WHO?!”

Then I connected that the lead actress is Mary Elizabeth Winstead. As in Ramona Flowers from the Scott Pilgrim vs the World movie. A highly grossly-maligned fun movie, I might add.

Then I found out who produced it : Bryan Unkeless (I, Tonya, Birds of Prey, Bright), Kelly McCormick (Deadpool 2, John Wick), and Patrick Newall. I’m not familiar with Newall’s history but the first is pretty promising.

THEN, I saw that MIYAVI will also be in this movie. MIYAVI is a Japanese guitar artist known for his finger slapping guitar style and the type of music video aesthetics that gives you courage to hit the road and conquer. What amazing timing since MIYAVI just announced his North American tour!

Details:

Release date: September 10, 2021

Directed By: Cedric Nicolas-Troyan

Screenplay By: Umair Aleem

Cast: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Tadanobu Asano, Miyavi, Michiel Huisman, introducing Miku Martineau, with Jun Kunimura, and Woody Harrelson

Pierre the Maze Detective on Switch

Pierre the Maze Detective is a puzzle book series from Japan that has been adapted for the Nintendo Switch. It looks to be a mixture of Where’s Waldo?” and old timey wimey aesthetic.

I do not have a Switch (yet) but this does look cute. It’s a visual smorgasbord of fun that seems to be very family friendly.
