Afro Futurism Drink & Draw @ Far East Bar

Of all the Drink & Draw events, I had to check out this Afro Futurism themed event.

Drink &Draw

@Far East Bar (Little Tokyo)

Afro Futurism is taking African culture and mixing with a bunch of mega science fiction elements. The best known example is Wakanda from Black Panther. I loved, loved,loved every visual from Wakanda from the accessories, clothes, all the way to the weapons.

Drink and Draws are great events to check out local drinking holes while drawing from live model. This event was hosted by the Concept Art Association and held at the Far East Bar in Little Tokyo. It was my first experience over all with the event and visit to the Far East Bar.

One cannot visit Little Tokyo at night without nipping into one of the ramen joints. The ramen joint of choice for this night was Mr. Ramen. This place is great for eating and reading. Every visit has been consistent with great service, great quality, and completely affordable. There is also some amazing artwork on the walls.

ramen and book

Both quite delicious

After a delicious bowl of ramen and equally delicious romance book, I sauntered over next door to the Far East Lounge and boom! Mega crowd.

The Afro Futurism theme drew a huge crowd. The ground floor and the second level was crowded full of artists already pretty deep in their drinks. I managed to find a table in the corner very far from the model. There were so many people, that all I could see was the head and a portion of the torso. Eventually it became so crowded that I could barely see the top of the head.

So…many…people

From what I could see of the models, it was pretty neat. They chose some really beautiful and fascinating looking models wearing various accessories and weapon pieces. It was pretty visually awesome.

At that point, I had managed only a copy of art pieces. The noise level and crowd level became a bit too much. Far East Lounge did feature a special themed drink for the night: Vanilla Daiquiri. Not sure how that specific for the event but it was pretty good at the beginning. As a slow drinker though, the vanilla flavor was thin enough to dissipate and mainly just a strong drink.

Overall, the theme was fantastic but the crowd cut the visit short. I am looking forward to any other future drink and draw events. There were whispers of a Star Wars themed one for the next one…
