The Botanical Fandom: Plant Haul from Mickey Hargity Plants

The Botanical Fandom: Plant Haul from Mickey Hargity Plants

We are all still staying home for the most part due to the Stay at Home Orders from the government. For many of us, this isn’t terribly difficult as it provides more time to care and cultivate our green hobby: collecting plants!

Caring for plants has been a recent hobby in the past year. It started with a couple of wedding favors: two little succulents. I didn’t know what they were then but then I now know they were an Escherveria and String of Buttons. Then came winning the Christmas Cactus from a holiday work party. Which looked so lonely on the ledge, so that encouraged a wandering into Lowe’s Garden Center. Where I wandered into the clearance section and took home my first ‘rescue” project: a Kalanchoe plant. Once it thrived, it ignited a deep love for Kalanchoes so I collected more and more.

Now, my little patio is full of succulents, cacti, and sprinkling of flowering plants and herbs. This has been an ongoing appreciation for the botanical arts and learning.

So it is no surprise that those at home have also developed a green thumb during this time. Which is excellent! The more people in the plant fandom, the merrier!

Branching away from the big box stories, I have turned my eye to local nurseries. One of the first highly recommended nursery from the group chats has been Mickey Hargity Plants in West Hollywood.

During the current regulations, Mickey was enforcing a five person limit, shopping time limited to 20 min, and face masks were required. Despite arriving by 9: 30 am on a Saturday, the line to enter was already twenty people deep. While waiting, I was able to read a good amount of chapters of “A Good Girls Guide to Murder” by Holly Jackson.

Once in, it was plant heaven. The aisles are narrow thanks to the abundance of large hanging leaves of container plants everywhere. The space is small but well organized. To the right is the green house with many houseplant varieties including snake plant and ZZ plant that I quickly nabbed. Then a quick wander around, quick pats to the shop cats, and right to the cacti collection.

Enjoy the plant haul!
