I Hate Fairyland (2022)#1: GERTRUDE is BACK!

I Hate Fairyland (2022)#1: GERTRUDE is BACK!

There is not much holding back my excitement for the return of Gertrude in I Hate Fairyland. There is actually nothing at all holding back the immense joy of seeing my green-haired comic book spirit guide return in all of her bright bloody gory. GERTRUDE IS BACK! GERTRUDE IS BACK!

Those who know Fairyland are already die-hard fans and have already contacted their comic books stores to add this to their pull list. For those who are curious, it is never too late to get into this candy-coated world of crazy. Come and enjoy the bright colors of a world where visceral massacre by apathetic green-haired darling is something to grin about. The first arc is available in hardcover form, get thee to your nearest comic book retailer. Now.

Who hasn’t wanted to travel to a land of magic and wonder as a child? Gertrude did. She was just a normal young kid who was violently sucked into Fairyland where the sun has a wide grin and the mountains are pink and topped with whipped cream. Among cheery songs and saccharine happiness, she is given a journey. In order to make it back home, she needs to find the key. With her trusty fly sidekick, she skips along the road to meet new friends, go on adventures, to seek the key. Now, in the stories that we know, characters like Gertrude would have found the key or whatever it is that will take them back home. Think Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. Not for Gertrude. She can’t find the key…for THIRTY YEARS. Even through she’s mentally aged thirty years, her body hasn’t aged. So she’s frustrated because she can’t find the key and stuck in a little kid body. And all of that saccharine cheer is enough to roil a stomach. Everyday without the key is a bad day. Who can blame her bloodlust to wallop the landscape into a bloody mess?! Might as well slash all of the cartoonish citizens. Whatever it takes to find that key fast.

The last time we saw Gertrude, she does end up back home. So that must be it. Story over. Except thankfully it not. You may take the girl from Fairyland but you can’t keep Fairyland away from the girl.

From the first issue, I wouldn’t blame Gertrude for going back. Adult Gertrude hasn’t had much of a fairy tale ending back at home. She’s like any other person in their mid-30’s. Tired, cranky, and jaded. She can barely hold down a job and her answer to life problems isn’t legal nor is it actually solving anything. In Fairyland, she had the power to destroy. As the main character of that fantasy world, the other characters couldn’t harm her. In the real world, the other person will not hesitate to hit back. Overall, it’s bleak. She may have done some pretty messed up things in Fairyland but reality is a major bummer compared to that.

So when there’s a chance to go back…I don’t think she’s going to hesitate too long….

I Hate Fairyland (2022) #1 will be available on November 16, 2022. Call your comic book retailer now, to add it to your pull list! Read the very first issue of I Hate Fairyland HERE.
